The FAA Follies

All the FAA madness we could fit!

Been a while…

Posted by Paul Cox on April 22nd, 2010

So I’m sitting here at an airport and my thoughts turn to the FAA.

Okay, that’s a lie. Partially a lie. I’m in Lima, Peru, and waiting for several hours between flights to head back to Norte America, and I noticed Don Brown’s latest blurb on Get the Flick.

Despite the fact that I’m not actively writing about FAA/NATCA stuff anymore, I still read a bit. Seeing Don’s post reminded me of all the ERAM stuff I’d written over the past few years.

So I point you back to this old post in the Follies, for starters.

To save you the reading (as if anyone is reading this blog anymore, come to think of it- I haven’t written in forever) that post was one I published on March 25, 2009- over a year ago.

In it, I took the FAA to task for cranking up its publicity machine to brag about how ERAM was being turned on that week.

I also pointed out what a lying gasbag Jerry Lavey was, and how incredibly lazy and lousy he was at his job for bloviating about what a great job the FAA was doing in getting systems implemented on time and under budget.

The points of that blog post were that ERAM was NOT going to be turned on that week, how it was still a bug-ridden piece of crap, how pathetic it is that the news media can’t actually report the truth, and how sad and pathetic it is that the people in the FAA who are supposed to communicate are lying gasbags.

Jerry Lavey retired not long afterwards.

Now, I bring this up because the FAA’s propaganda machine is alive and well. Just because the agency has decided been ordered to quit treating its employees like something the cat threw up on the front step doesn’t mean it has quit trotting out its cast of lying losers.

In a news story discussing the latest problems with ERAM (which actually boil down to the same problem, namely, the piece of shit doesn’t work), the FAA’s Diane Spitaliere claimed…

“We are not expecting any major delays,” spokeswoman Diane Spitaliere said yesterday in an e-mail. The system ran at the Salt Lake City center from March 14 through March 19, when data failures forced the agency to halt the program. The agency documented malfunctions such as data failing to transfer when one controller handed off aircraft supervision to a colleague.

No major delays, huh?

Remember up at the top of this post, where I referred to a post? That was from LAST YEAR.

This article was one that I mentioned… from LAST YEAR… in Aviation Week. It claimed that the FAA was ready to turn on ERAM on live traffic in a matter of days.

Ms Spitiliere, the program is OVER A GODDAMN YEAR LATE… and you claim that you’re not expecting any major delays?

FAA’s Chief Operating Officer Hank Krakowski gets in on the lying, too:

“We’ve had a couple hiccups where we’ve had to take the system down to correct software issues,” FAA Chief Operating Officer Hank Krakowski told a hearing March 18.

The agency documented malfunctions such as data failing to transfer when one controller handed off aircraft supervision to a colleague.

At the Salt Lake City center, flight information sometimes failed to accompany aircraft targets displayed on radar scopes when supervision of the flight passed from one controller to another, Gilbert said. Information would go to the wrong controller or not transfer at all, and flight details would be paired to the wrong plane, though safety was never at risk due to controller actions, she said.

So the system for maintaining identity and data on aircraft, for tracking aircraft, and for handling the management of those aircraft doesn’t actually do those things reliably… and Mr Krakowski claims it’s got “a couple of hiccups”?

Jesus H Christ on a pogo stick.

Maybe it’s the fact that I am getting over having typhoid and amoebic dysentery (true story!) and had to miss seeing Machu Picchu, but it’s utter bullshit like this that makes me wonder why anyone enjoys working for the FAA these days.

Improved employee relations notwithstanding.

We are still led by liars. They lie to their own employees, they lie to the media, they refuse to listen to their employees, and they even lie to Congress.

I’m tempted to get back into the game, but to be frank, I don’t know if I have the stomach for it.

I saw Hank Krakowski at the ATC Global 2010 Conference in Amsterdam a few months ago (where, by the way, I believe I was the only American air traffic controller in attendence- for an “ATC” conference it’s remarkable how few controllers from anywhere actually attend) and thought about giving him a nice helping of Truth… but didn’t bother.

Why should I? Like I’ve said before in the Follies… meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

The Propaganda Machine is still up and churning away. NATCA lost its cojones sometime in the past few years (if NATCA still had any balls, we would have been picketing airports with handouts saying “The FAA is using your flight to beta test bug-riddled ATC computer software!”). President Obama might be The Man in the big chair, but the folks at 800 Independence are still the same and still unwilling to deal with the Truth.

The Sounders game is on in a couple of hours. Back to finding a bar here with ESPN+ so I can watch it.

Nice to have you back blogging Paul.

Dollar on a dime bet ERAM is still NORAM by this time next year.

  5. Dale Kettring Says:

Welcome back, Paul. It’s good to see you writing again. Hopefully, this is a precursor of things to come.

  6. retired/ZZ Says:

Welcome Back, even if only for a short while! Hope you get home safe and feel better soon. Look forward to hearing from you again soon.

  7. Um Says:

We’re still checking in from time to time. Sorry to hear you got sick… feel better soon! As anyone who’s played “Oregon Trail” knows, those diseases are some pretty rough ones.

  8. Unbelievable Says:

And never forget, when they bring up money being an issue, over the six year span when the red book ends…controllers got a 9% raise over the past 6 years, while management got over 25%!

  9. BP Says:

    “while management got over 25%”
that is why all the new controllers and suck ups are bidding every job they can to become a FLM. Blakeys plan is still working. Look at all the selfish fu^ks who took the “blood money” to stay instead of retire (even though they put in their paperwork to retire) and transfer to busier facilities like SCT. This is exactly how the FAA wanted it. ATC is well on its way to becoming contracted out. Kiss that govt. pension goodbye. You did it to yourselves.

  10. OMGWTF Says:

BP, try taking some medication, and chilling out a little. Controllers got ****ed, I think everybody agrees with that but I bid on a supe job in January (didn’t get it) and I’m far from a suck up. If we don’t get some qualifed controllers into FAA management who is going to be selected? The lazy, the inept, the unqualified, the non-union asshole with a chip on his shoulder? You can’t whine and cry about good controllers bidding supe jobs and then bitch about it when nobody deserving or qualified gets selected for those jobs. I do not agree with controllers bidding supe jobs during the IWR, but each person has their reasons and has to live with themselves.

“Look at all the selfish fu^ks who took the “blood money” to stay instead of retire (even though they put in their paperwork to retire) and transfer to busier facilities like SCT.”

Talk is cheap, show us how dedicated you are by quitting….or shut up.

  12. BP Says:

Been retired for over 3 years jerk off.

  13. 28+ Says:

“Been retired for over 3 years jerk off.”

Didn’t notice you were gone, sorry. Why you hanging around these sites?

  14. OMGWTF Says:

Why you hanging around these sites?

Because he’s bitter, angry has no life and nobody likes him. Just like when he was working.

  15. FAA puts safety first Says:

Glad to have you back Paul! Hope to hear more from you.

  16. SWJ Says:

BP, I agree with you 100% The truth hurts .28 + has been trying to convince everyone for years he is not a management suck up. Those of us who worked with him know better. We did the right thing and they know it. They really hate being exposed for what they really are…..selfish, spineless, me me me , pieces of SH&T.

  17. 28+ Says:

“We did the right thing and they know it.”

If you retired because you were ready, then you did do the right thing. Good for you! If you retired because people told you you should, then you are an idiot.

“28+ has been trying to convince everyone for years he is not a management suck up”

I think my manager would disagree with you on that one. I haven’t been trying to convince you about anything, I really don’t care what you think.

  18. SWJ Says:

Those of us that work(ed) with you know better. stop living a lie. We know you don’t care what we think. that is my point exactly. You are a very selfish human being.

  19. BP Says:

Thanks SWJ, We are in the minority . At least i can look at myself in the mirror everyday and know I did the right thing. Just for the record…I retired because I knew it was the right thing to do. You stayed and, my guess is, worked as much OT as possible because it was the right thing for a selfish POS to do. union brother ……..I think not !

  20. BP Says:

By you I meant 28 +. Sorry about any confusion there.

  21. 28+ Says:

“I retired because I knew it was the right thing to do. You stayed and, my guess is, worked as much OT as possible because it was the right thing for a selfish POS to do. union brother ……..I think not !”

It sounds like you really didn’t want to retire. You were just doing the right thing like people told you….idiot. You guys crack me up. I’m selfish because I enjoy my job, while you live in the past checking out ATC/NATCA websites.

  22. acontrollerwith20+ Says:

    28+

Without people like you entering the FAA for IWR pay scales, without people like you taking a bid to a suddenly hard to staff facility, The IWR’s would have lasted maybe a year. Instead folks like you made them last over 3 years. And even now, the FAA refuses to give us a printed contract, even though it has been ratified.

Facebook is very interesting. It shows people that you know as friends, their friends lists. I know that none of my “friends of friends” have more than one or two management types. I have none.

How many local meetings have you attended? How many offices have you held? If you are a NATCA member, you are just an Allstate kinda guy. “Join NATCA, be a dues paying member, and when you screw up you are in helping hands”. Or how about, “Here’s to you Mr. Just Paying Dues Guy, you do the minimum, we got your back”!

  23. 28+ Says:

“The IWR’s would have lasted maybe a year.”

The IWR’s would have stayed in place until Bush left office no matter what happened. That admin. would destroy the country before they would ever admit being wrong.

“Without people like you entering the FAA for IWR pay scales”

I’m not sure who this is directed to..but there is some truth in this statement. The only thing that I could see happening that could have changed the IWR’s is if no new people hired on. The people not retiring, or taking the “blood money”, are not the ones that made the IWR’s last. What made the FAA think it would work is all the new people they were able to hire. The old guys that stuck around poisoned the attitude of the new hires, and they were not afraid to piss off management every day. In my facility it’s the old guys that stir the pot all the time. If a problem pops up we attack it immediately…what are they gonna do? Make us retire?

  24. 28+ Says:

If everyone that could retire did, those that were left would have been working 6-10 hour days with no annual leave. That is what happened in many facilities in 1981 and 82. You would have huge annual leave balances due to restored leave, but you would not have seen your family until people checked out. The people that were misled, and retired to make a point, only made it harder for the rest of us to get leave. The election forced a new contract, not the retirees.

  25. BP Says:

Acontrollerwith20+, GREAT POST ! I could not have said it better myself.
I worked with a few guys like 28+ and I knew they would not be there when needed on any front small or large.
I noticed 28+ did not answer one of your questions.
He is the real IDIOT here.

  26. Midnightrider Says:

“I know that none of my friends of friends have one or two management types. I have none. DAMN STRAIGHT !!!! I too have NONE!
I do not talk to them unless it is ATC related and the controllers that do , in my opinion, are nothing but kiss asses hoping to be in their position one day. I have no respect for people like 28+ . In vietnam they were called “charlie”. You never knew who’s side they were on and they could never be trusted.

  27. 28+ Says:

“I do not talk to them unless it is ATC related”

    That’s gotta break their hearts.

“I have no respect for people like 28+ . In vietnam they were called “charlie”. You never knew who’s side they were on and they could never be trusted.”

I don’t care about your respect or you opinion, Skippy.

  28. Midnightrider Says:

We know you don’t care about anyone but yourself. You have proven that with your selfish comments here. That is my point.
Nobody likes working with scum like you.
    You cannot be trusted.

  29. 28+ Says:

“We know you don’t care about anyone but yourself. You have proven that with your selfish comments here. That is my point.
Nobody likes working with scum like you.
    You cannot be trusted.”

You guys sound like a couple of republicans….if I disagree with you, then I am scum and a commie, and I can’t be trusted. If I don’t see things as narrowly as you then I must be a threat to the American way. I’ll say it again…if you retired because people told you that it would be the right thing to do, you are an idiot. If it was your plan to retire when you did, good for you.

  30. Midnightrider Says:

    KOO KOO…….KOO KOO !
    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  31. acontrollerwith20+ Says:

    Ah Hell,

Dont worry about it 28+. I got repubs at my facility that are quitting the PAC next year. They mistakingly think that the PAC only support Dems.

Why? Because they put money in for change, and now that we had change, when they quit the PAC, it is for the good of our country! W!T!F! over? As they say Obama was good for ATC but not for our country!?

Man up old man! Get involved. Find out what is really going on in NATCA other than your facility. Call your RVP. You can get the number easily. Hell call Paul or Trish. STFU until you get the real story, and then get involved.

28+, Flip flop all you want. You and your ilk suck. Carry on, I am am done on this topic.
Frak I can’t link to my spell checker!!!

  32. Midnightrider Says:

    I second that !
28+ never did answer any of those questions. Makes one wonder if he is even a NATCA member.

  33. timetogo Says:

For those of who are able to retire within the next 3-5 years should probably do so. The FAA is not going to do much with NATCA. It is quite evident that the FAA under Babbit is only pretending to be a partner. This is the set up for the inevitable….contracting ATC out once and for all.
Foe those of you with more than 5 years to go before you can retire, I hope I am wrong. The days of ATC government pensions are coming to an end. The writing is on the wall.

  34. AS@SCT Says:

Lavey was just another FAA management stooge (among many) coopted by Blakey’s handful of silver in the way of fancy titles and/or an office with a potted plant. Did he need this additional motivation to spew his anti union, anti controller vitriol ? I neither know nor do I care. I’m just glad his sorry ass is gone.

  35. ZZ Says:

AS, you are 100% correct. When is your retirement bash brother ?
    ZZ

  36. Don "Crude" Craig Says:

    AS@SCT Says:
“Lavey – snip- I’m just glad his sorry ass is gone.”

I’ll second and third that motion! What an A$$, unfortunately there are many more like him still within the agency.

Crude – X-D10 – Retired from that bullshit and loving it!

  37. Amy Says:

Jerry did not retire – he had no choice as he was caught with his hands in the cookie jar – namely a 20 year old. Pipes should be next – he has the same bad habits only he has no real preference.

  38. SPJ Says:

On Saturday May 8th Ron Geyer was elected Facrep of SCT.
I can feel the excitement throughout the facility.
This finally puts and end to the Tony Vella/ Steve Merlin era.
Mel Davis did an excellent job too but was always haunted by Vella’s need for revenge and sabatage of the local.
Merlin was smart and just went away. That is to say, he went straight to management. Go figure !
As for Vella and his behind the scenes sabataging tactics, well lets just say he is DONE !
For those of you who did not know, Vella would forward all NATCA e-mails to the ATM ,at the time, and at one point almost got Ron and the LA area rep fired. It was very close , just ask them and they will tell you what happened. He would call the ZLA reps and tell them half truths in hopes of getting SCT NATCA in hot water. He actually convinced a Dept area controller to drop out of the union . Keeping in mind he kept paying his dues while stabbing the local in the back every chance he could.
Anyway, congratualtions to Ron Geyer ! A TRUE UNION BROTHER and a great pick for FACREP.

  39. SCT-BUR Says:

It won’t be long now before Tony V. either retires or takes a FLM job. His followers are few in number and he knows it.

  40. Tony Vella Says:

thats the first time i heard the one about trying to get Geyer and Voelpel fired. i’m sure both of them were very scared. I’ll have to ask them to tell me all about that traumatic experience. i’ve already heard all the other BS about a thousand times.
    Tony Vella, SCT LA

  41. SCT-BUR Says:

Could you please explain the e-mails forwarded to Linda Obrien (ATM) ? While you are at it why don’t you ask Ham why DuCharme came to SCT a few years back ?
    I think you know why.

  42. Tony Vella Says:

    SCT-BUR,
i’ll need a name or a badge # before i answer any questions.
    AX

  43. SCT-BUR Says:

Just what I thought. you are not going to answer anything.
No need to anyway. We all know the answers.

  44. L56-SCT Says:

AX was doing a fine job until he starting doing more for the non-union scum bags in SAN area than for the membership.
He went sideways during the IWR’s and was used/ bluffed by management to do their bidding for them. Geyer and Voelpel at least have a vision on the direction needed for the local. I am going to retire next year so I really don’t care anymore.

  45. Tony Vella Says:

yeah just what i thought too. if you want to ask me a question why don’t you just walk over to my area and ask. no virtual screen name to hide behind though.
i don’t know anything about why ducharme came to sct. like you, i wasn’t in the meeting and i have never met him. if it was something of importance there should be minutes of the meeting with signatures from both parties. ducharme was supposed to be availabe in room 60 to take questions from the bu in the afternoon but that was abruptly canceled.

  46. SCT-BUR Says:

You hid for years behind the scenes screwing with Mel, Geyer and Volepel in every possible way. Instead of embracing them as union brothers, you tried to take them down just because they did not agree with you. As it turns out, they were right and you were wrong.

  47. Tony Vella Says:

i hid for years? i’m not the one hiding behind a screen name. like i said, if you’ve got the stones to ask me a question or say something to me face to face, i’ll be here, working the same sectors i’ve been working for the last 24 years.

    AX

  48. SCT-BUR Says:

Don’t change the subject . if you have nothing to hide then just answer the questions.
It does not matter anyway. We all know the answers. Just wanted to see if you were man enough to fess up.

  49. wtf Says:

SCT-BUR, go ask him in person for god’s sake. I don’t know who is right, but you’re not doing yourself any favors with this lunacy. Of course you don’t care, because you still aren’t using a name.

  50. acontrollerwith20+ Says:

    Paul,

The Sounders won, which is more than I can say for the Mariners. Another 9th inning loss. Post something, stop us from feasting on ourselves!!!

  51. SPJ Says:

I have verified everything in my initial comment. I don’t have to ask Tony anything….except maybe…why doesn’t he just retire ?

  52. AS@SCT Says:

What I see at SCT is an all management, all the time agenda. They’ve gotten the wage gap where they want it: 1st year CPC new hire makes about 110K in base, a first time FLM 160K (absurd and ridiculous). And their internal promotions and nest feathering (we have 25% more “managers” than we did a decade ago) are seemingly more important to them then moving airplanes.

Fewer CPCs, less traffic, about 80 trainee new hires (who had no business starting their FAA careers at SCT), but 15 or so more employees at the MSS 2 and higher level than we had ten years ago. And one of the (among many) conflicting agenda issues we have is the number of people working in the QA and “safety” shops, juxtaposed to the ATSAP program. You don’t need 8-10 staff specialists and two OMs to monitor phraseology….well expect at SCT.

  53. shthowdy Says:

I wonder how you McCain supporters feel today ?
He only wants to freeze our wages for a year !
You better hope that a Republican president does not get in the WH in 2012 because if that happens ,we are done !

  54. AS@SCT Says:

Pay freeze amdts in both bodies, were defeated this week. If Republicans take back control of the House come January (not the slam dunk they seem to think that is) you will see similar attempts next year. GOP control of the House would put the self designated NATCA/controller hater John Mica(R FL 7), in control of the T and I committee. He’d spend the majority of his day, trying to figure out how to force the Obama WH back on the nontract (white book). Ultimately Mica would fail, but you can bet FAAMA will beat a path to his door on a daily basis…..co conspirators. Thankfully, I won’t be around to see it.

  55. shthowdy Says:

I see where the FAA wants to allow controllers who are 56 to put in for a 5 year age waiver. This time they don’t care how many deals you had. That ought to keep the real jerk offs around for a while. I am sure all of the controllers who put in their retirment papers (with no intention of retiring) a few years back just to get the “blood money” from Blakey will be signing up for this program…..ya right !
Before you know it , the FAA will want to change the mandatory retirement age to 61 too.

  56. AS@SCT Says:

FAA just approved a second waiver for a guy in my area. It’s a tacit admission; FAA failed to properly hire, screen, place and train. Snakey had all the time in the world to properly staff the system. Rather than do that, she choose an ideological agenda: union bust and controller bash. Impose her white book and drive out most of the CSRS controllers. You reap what you sow. Kids training kids, too much inexperience, too many zero background newbies traing at ATC 9 and higher terminals. Of course we do have about 65 people at the MSS 2 and higher level to “manage” the operation at SCT. The much ballyhooed taxpayers are certainly getting their money’s worth out of the higher skill set.

  57. SCT-BUR Says:

Tony Vella took that “blood money” and I think he was still the FACREP when he took it.

  58. AS@SCT Says:

There are at least three or four at SCT who not only took the blood money, but are now on age 56 waivers. And in at least one case, a second one year waiver. Giving controllers money to prevent them from doing something (retiring) that they weren’t going to do anyway, was one of the more egregious actions Snakey inc engaged in on controller pay. I’m sick to death of the FAA/ATO mgmt gang. Too many self aggrandizing cheap neck ties sloshing around my facility and up the chain. And no one who wears a headset should kid themselves; FAA mgmt and the FAAMA are just waiting around, hoping Obama is a one termer, so they can go back to what feels right to them: ridiculous dress codes, a resumption of the pay rip off of controllers, other imposed work rules and their boot on controller’s necks. I think I’ll retire now.

  59. SCT-BUR Says:

I know of at least 2 controllers who had retired only to return to SCT for chump change “to help out” . The only thing they “helped out” was the FAA’s agenda.
The same goes for the people who transfered in for the”Blood money”. But the worst of them all, in my opinion, were the scum who took FLM jobs during the Iwr’s.

  60. AS@SCT Says:

Saw Eddie Mac four or five years back at a retirement party. He had just left for the east coast mgmt gig and was back for a visit. Speaking of mgmt, my facrep tells me SCT has 68 employees assigned at the MSS 2 or higher level. 68 to manage about 260 total CPCs, trainees, TMCs and staff. That’s less than a 4 to 1 span of control. Show me a private sector entity with one boss for every 3.8 employees and I’ll show you an organization that will never make a dime of profit. Running it like a business…oh puhleeeeze. FAAMA nest feathering at it’s finest.

  61. SueEllen Says:

Congratulations AS on your decision to retire. We will miss reading comments from an educated and informed controller. I think you will enjoy life away from all the jackasses at work.

  62. AS@SCT Says:

Thanks Sue Ellen It’s been a great career, mostly rewarding. Well, with the exception of the Bush Blakey dark years. Yea, there’s a few A holes at work, but they have nothing to do with my decision to retire.

  63. ZZ-Retired Says:

Congrats AS on your retirement. I always enjoyed working with you. Trust me, retirement is WONDERFUL ! Not having to work around people like Andrea Anderson anymore is a beautiful thing.
I don’t remember this Hamilton guy. Was he there back in 2007 ?
Anyway, if you are interested in some part time consulting at NASA give me a buzz.
    ZZ

  64. SPJ Says:

Stinky, I beg to differ. right now deals are at an all time high while traffic is at an all time low. Not to mention, the wash out rate , at SCT anyway, is very high. This is a direct result of the Bush/Blakey IWR’s.
This is a recipe for disaster. My guess is that you have not vectored an airplane in years but have no problem telling your neighbors that you are an air taffic controller.

  65. Ruthie Says:

Hey, hey, hey you sheep out there in cyberspace. Time to tune into the SCT cat fight ensuing on this blog. Utterly amazing. Controllers are quite a breed, some good some bad. The lack of maturity here is howver, overwhelming.

So a brief commentary on SCT controllers. I believe there are many controllers who after visiting this site are sick. Knowing that most controllers are mature adults. They must wonder however, if they’re in the right job. Working along side idiots like the ones that write here. I think many controllers are literally trapped in their positions due to the great salary and benefits. They hate the FAA, their superiors, their co-workers and all believe that they’re special individuals. You can’t quit though. You know you’ll never get another job, like this, that pays this well. Trapped. It’s a miserable feeling. If you’re miserable and immature, you write in this blog. If you’re just miserable you read here. [sigh]

  66. Husband of an ATC Says:

“Hey, nobody is forcing anyone to read this blog. If you dont like what you read then DON’T READ IT.”

The blog was great, while it lasted. The comments section though, has become a travesty, because of the conduct of a few. Whether I stop reading it or not, that doesn’t take it out of the public view.

If you want to have a family squabble, that’s fine, but to do it so the whole neighborhood can hear it is totally lacking in class.

(And that’s the last I’ll have to say on the subject. You either get it, or you don’t.)

I haven’t checked on here in a while, but I got an email saying a bunch of comments were going over the line.

This is disgusting. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. Grow up.
